Accommodation for some of the volunteers was on an old cruise ship which at one time used to star in the “Love Boat” series. “Nice and cozy”  i.e. three or four people to a cabin. The gangway was really steep and got steeper when the tide was in. A one hour bus commute to the competition venue and strict access security to the ship i.e. one was on the bus or one wouldn’t get in.

Falling asleep on the commute was quite normal, in the morning it would still be dark and in the evening one was too tired.

One had to be careful at the Olympics, shooting pictures of the competitors was more than just frowned upon. Apart from that most of the time one was too busy anyway.

As mentioned this wasn’t a vacation!!!

Einquartiert waren eine Anzahl von Freiwilligen auf einem alten Kreuzfahrtsschiff, dass früher mal in der “Love Boat” Serie eine Starrolle hatte. Drei oder vier Personen pro Kabine im ehemaligen “Kreuzfahrtluxus”. Die Landungstreppe war steil und bei Flut noch steiler. Die Zugangsüberwachung war streng, Zugang entweder mit dem Bus oder halt gar nicht.

Zum Wettkampfort im Callaghan Valley ging’s mit dem Pendlerbus. Morgens war es noch dunkel und nachmittags war man zu müde, also schlief man öfters.

An der Olympiade musste man mit der Kamera sehr vorsichtig sein. Meist war man - zumindest hinter dem Zieleinlauf - sowieso zu beschäfigt.

Wie gesagt, das war kein Urlaub!!!
